Lewis [or Louis] Brophy

Before the war

He was 28 when he enlisted (3 [31 in 1863], 8, 12 [28 in 1860]). He was born in Bucks [?] County [?], Pennsylvania (3, 8 [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania], 12).

In 1860, he was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with Samuel Griffith and others (12). He was an iron moulder (12).

When he enlisted, he was a moulder (3, 8).

Description

He was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (3, 8 [5'8"]).

During the war

He was enrolled and mustered into service as a private in company E on 20 August 1861 (1, 8). He was mustered in by Colonel Reiff (3).

In March 1862, he was promoted to sergeant for soldierly appearance (3) (or perhaps soldierly conduct, 4).

On 1 January 1863, he was promoted to first sergeant for soldierly conduct in late battle, replacing Baker, who had been promoted (3, 4, 8).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, as a sergeant (5).

He was at Camp Convalescent, Alexandria, Virginia, on 8 September 1863, when Lieutenant Colonel Sinex asked for his return (6).

On 6 October 1863, he returned from hospital (7).

He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer (1), on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (3, 8). He was enlisted for 3 years by Lt Carpenter [perhaps William H Carpenter, lt, co K] (3).

He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia (1), by being shot in the left temple while charging the enemy (2). He died on 23 June 1864 of those wounds (1, 2, 3, 8, 9).

He was buried at City Point, Virginia (1, 11).

On 26 January 1865, company E published resolutions mourning his death (and fifteen others), and sympathizing with their families (10).
