Andrew Brown

Before the war

He was 21 years old when he was enlisted (9). He was born in Tyrone, Ireland (9).

Description

He was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (9). He had a scar on the side of his left eye (9).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 27 August 1861 (1, 9, 10). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, by Colonel Reiff (9, 10 [Lt Col Reiff]). He served in company C (1).

He may have been declared a deserter on 27 February 1863 (2).

On 7 May 1863, he was reported missing in action (3). On 17 May 1863, he was reported to be in the Corps Hospital as a paroled prisoner (4).

On 6 October 1863, he may have been reported regained from desertion (5).

He was promoted to corporal, probably after March 1864 (7).

He was wounded 19 June 1864 near Petersburg, Virginia (1). He died on 19 June 1864 of those wounds (1, 7 [killed in action 18 Jun 64], 8 [died of wounds, 18 Jun 64], 9 [killed in action 18 Jun 64], 10 [died 19 Jun 64 of wounds], 11). He was then a corporal (1).

His body was buried on the field (8). He was buried in the National Cemetery at City Point, section E division 1 grave 64 (1). The Record of the Federal Dead lists him as being originally buried on Prince George Road, one-half mile east of Meade Station; other soldiers from this same area were moved to Poplar Grove Cemetery, but most of them are now listed as unknown soldiers at Poplar Grove (6).

After the war

On 18 June 1869, his father applied successfully for a pension (12).
