Conrad RB Brown

Before the war

He was born in August 1831 (19). He was 23 years old when he was enrolled (5, 7, 16 [45 in ?1884], 17 [46 in ?1883], 19 [68 in 1900]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 14, 16, 17, 19).

His occupation was soldier (5). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enrolled (5).

Description

He was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, black eyes, and brown hair (5 [dark complexion, brown-blue eyes, dark hair], 7 [dark complexion, black eyes, brown hair]).

During the war

He also served in company E of the 42nd US Infantry (11, 13, 18).

According to the 1890 census, he was enlisted in September 1861 (10). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 2 November 1861 (1, 5, 7, 18 [4 Dec 1861]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Parsons (5, 7). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He served as a private, initially in company B (1, 18).

He was transferred to company C (1, 5, 13).

He may be the Conrad whom T H Parsons assigned to bury William H Brown (with John Wright) after the Battle of Fredericksburg (20). If so, Parsons told William Brown's widow that he was safe (20).

On 16 May 1863, he was assigned as a guard at Division Headquarters (2).

He may have been declared a deserter on 27 February 1863 (2). On 6 October 1863, he may have been reported regained from desertion (4).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer, on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 5, 8 [24 Dec]).

He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia (1). On 29 June 1864, the regiment reported him dead of wounds received in action (9). However, he was reported regained on 4 September 1864 (12).

He was discharged at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 29 December 1864 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 5, 6, 7, 15, 18). According to the 1890 census, he was discharged in September 1864 (10).

He also served in company G 21 Veterans Reserve Corps (11, 13, 18).

His papers were sent to the Pension Office on 27 February 1865 (7).

He served for thirty-six months (16, 17).

The pension index card has a cross reference to a Navy file; I do not know what the point of the reference is (18).

After the war

On 12 January 1865, he successfully applied for a pension (11, 13, 18).

On 31 July 1883, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home, Southern Branch (15, 16, 17). He was admitted from Pennsylvania (17).

In 1884, he was present in the Eastern Branch of the National Soldiers Home (16). He was receiving a pension of $10 per month (16). He had a wound in his side (16).

In 1885, he was living in the National Soldiers Home, Southern Branch (15). He had a wound in his side (14). He was 46 years old (14). He received a pension of $14 per month (14).

In 1888/89, he married Sarah E [unknown surname] (19). She apparently had at least one child then (19). In 1900, she reported having had five children, four of whom were alive (19).

In 1890, he was living at the National Soldiers Home, Southern Branch, in Elizabeth City County, Virginia (10). He had rheumatism and piles (10).

He was receiving a pension of $14 per month, probably in 1894 (17). He had a wound in his wide (17).

He was discharged from the Southern Branch of the National Soldiers Home on 24 September 1894 (17).

In 1900, he was living in Clover Hill District, Appomattox County, Virginia (19). He was living with his wife Sarah, his stepson William, and his children Mary, Charles, and Josephine (19). He was not working (19).

He died on 21 November 1904, at Hollywood, [Appomattox County], Virginia (11, 18).

On 19 December 1904, his widow, Sarah E Brown, successfully applied from Virginia for a pension (11, 13, 18).

On 24 January 1914, a minor dependent, Sarah E Edmondson, successfully applied from Virginia for a pension (11, 13, 18).
