He was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (2).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 2). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 18 March 1865 (1, 2). He was enlisted for one year, at Williamsport, Pennsylvania, by Captain Blair (2). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1).

He was discharged by general order on 9 August 1865 (1).

After the war

In 1880, he was living in Buckeye Township, Stephenson County, Illinois (5). He was living with his wife Mary, and children Sarah, John, and Hattie (5). He was a farmer (5).

On 28 May 1892, he applied successfully from Illinois for a pension (3, 4).

He died in 1894 (4).

On 28 April 1894, his widow, Mary Brown, applied successfully from Illinois for a pension (3, 4).

[I did not find an entry for him in Ancestry's index to the 1890 veteran's census (searched April 2007)--as expected, since all entries from states prior to Kentucky are lost, though one Emanuel S Brown in Shamokin had no identifying information]
