Montgomery Burr

Before the war

He was 22 when he enlisted (4 [25 in 1864], 11, 15 [21 (?) in 1860], 16 [29 in 1870]). He was born in Georgetown, Delaware (4, 11, 15, 16 [PA]).

In 1850, he was living in the Pine Ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). He was living with Joseph and Hetty Burr (presumably his parents (17). He had attended school within the year (17).

In 1860, he was living in the 19th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was a silversmith (15). He was living with Joseph and Hester Burr (presumably his parents), and six other Burr's (presumably his siblings) (15).

When he was enlisted, he was a silversmith (4, 11). He was living in Philadelphia (11).

Description

He was 6 feet 1-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (4, 11 [brown hair]).

During the war

He was mustered into service as a private in company B on 28 August 1861 (1) or 21 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 11 [20 Aug], 13). At some point, he was transferred to company E--perhaps the fact that Bates records him as a veteran under company B, but not under company E, suggests that the transfer occurred after December 1863 (11).

He was appointed corporal on 10 September 1861 (3). (According to (4), he was promoted to corporal for soldierly appearances.) He was mustered into service by Captain Barnard (this may refer to his re-enlistment in 1864) (4).

He fought in the battle of Gettysburg (10), and was wounded in action there (4).

He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 March 1864, at Warrenton Junction, Virginia (4, 7, 11). He was re-enlisted by Lieutenant Brass, for 3 years (4).

He was reported on a ten-day furlough on 27 April 1864 (12).

He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, VA (1, 4).

He was promoted on 16 September 1864 from corporal to sergeant, replacing Hope, who had been promoted (3, 4, 6).

He was discharged at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, EITHER on 15 May 1865 by special order (1) OR on 18 May 1865 on surgeon's certificate of disability (5, 11 [18 Mar, by special order 77], 13 [18 May], 18).

After the war

He applied successfully for a pension on 20 July 1866, and again on 18 February 1907 (8, 14, 20).

In 1870, he was living in the 7th ward of Philadelphia (16). He was a silversmith (16). He was living with his wife Martha and (probably) their daughter Lillian (16).

He attended the 1884 meeting of the 91st's Survivors' Association (2).

In 1890 he was living at 1324 Tiernan Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9, 13). He was a silversmith (9). He had a gunshot wound of the left thigh, and had paralysis, apparently because of that wound (13).

On 13 July 1907, he died (19). The funeral was held on Wednesday at 916 Ridge Avenue, in Darby (19). Among the groups invited to attend was the Leiner Post of the GAR (19). He was buried in Arlington Cemetery--presumably the Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (19).

His widow, Martha M Burr, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 26 October 1907 (8, 14, 20).
