He was enlisted and mustered into service on 7 November 1861 (1, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by C L Zinn (?) (5). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1).

He was promoted to corporal on 20 May 1862, replacing Charles Burket (3).

He was discharged at camp near Falmouth, Virginia, on 6 February 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2 [5 Feb], 4, 5). He was then a corporal (1, 2).
