During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 22 November 1861 (1, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Fetter (4). He initially served as a private in company G (1).

He was transferred on 4 December 1861 to company F (1, 5).

He was discharged from Franklin Square Barracks, Washington, DC, on 26 or 28 March 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability, due to "Stricture of Urethra caused by the kick of a horse" (1, 2, 3, 4).
