In 1857/58, he married Sarah [unknown surname] (9). In 1900, she reported having had 10 children, 9 of whom were alive (9). In 1910, she reported having had 8 children, 6 of whom were alive (10).

He was a laborer when he was enlisted (4, 5, 6).

Description

He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (4, 5, 6).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 4, 5, 6). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 10 or 16 July 1863 in the 62nd Pennsylvania (1, 4 [16 Jul], 5 [16 Jul], 6 [16 Jul]). He served in company L (12). He was enlisted for three years, in Butler County, Pennsylvania (4, 6). His service was credited to the 22nd congressional district (5, 6).

He was transferred on 20 July 1864 from company L of the 62nd Pennsylvania to the 91st (1). On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G (2). On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company (3). He was then present, as a private (3). He served as a private in company K (1).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1).

After the war

In 1890, he was living in the second ward of Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania (8).

On 30 July 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (7, 11, 12).

In 1900, he was living on South Race Street, in Greenville Borough, Mercer County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Sarah and daughter Flora (9). He was a stationary engineer (9).

On 18 February 1907, his widow, Sarah J Chaffee, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (7, 12).

In 1910, his widow, Sarah Chafee, was living on Race Street, in Greenville Borough, Mercer County, Pennsylvania (10).
