He was a teacher when he was enlisted (4 [sic!]). He was a farmer when he was enlisted (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a sandy complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair (3).

During the war

He was enlisted on 14 September 1861 (4). He was mustered into service on 20 September 1861 (1, 3, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at East Hampton, Massachusetts, by Captain Vance (3). He was mustered into the 27th Massachusetts Volunteers, in company A (3).

He was transferred to the 91st Pennsylvania, by order (3). He served as a private in company G (1).

He was transferred on 21 or 25 June 1862 to "his own" 27th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (1 [25 Jun], 2 [21? Jun], 3 [21 ? Jun]).

He reenlisted on 25 November 1863 (4).

He was promoted to corporal on 5 January 1864 (4).

He was captured on 16 May 1864, at Drury's Bluff, Virginia (4).

He died of disease on 30 September 1864, at Andersonville, Georgia, as a prisoner of war (4).
