William Cloud

Before the war

He was born on 22 June 1844 or 1845 (18). He was 18 years old when he was enlisted (11, 13, 14). He was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania (11, 13, 14).

He was a shoemak[er] when he was enlisted (11, 13, 14).

Description

He was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (11, 13, 14).

During the war

He served on the Constellation, Vermont, and Minnesota (19).

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 25 September 1861 (1 [27 Sep], 8 [25 Sep], 11 [25 Sep]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner (11). He was mustered in as a private in company K, by Captain Dye (11).

He was appointed corporal on 8 October 1861 (10).

He was wounded in the leg on 3 May 1863 (12, 17).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (1, 13, 14 [26 Dec 64]). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Carpenter (13, 14). He was mustered in by Lieutenant Swan (13, 14).

He was a corporal on 10 September 1864, but was reduced to the ranks then, "for using insolent language to his superior officers" (2).

On 14 November 1864 he was promoted to corporal, probably effective 27 September 1864 (3, 12).

On 25 January 1865, he went on a furlough, which ended on 9 February 1865 (7).

On 17 February 1865, he was promoted to sergeant, effective 1 January 1865 (4, 12).

On 27 April 1865, he was initially ordered to be promoted to first sergeant, effective 1 April 1865, but his name was crossed out (5).

He was promoted from sergeant to first sergeant on 6 June 1865 (1, 12). On 15 June 1865, he was promoted to first sergeant, effective 7 June 1865 (6).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 7 [14 Jul]).

After the war

In 1880, he was living at 2412 Stewart Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was living with his wife Priscilla, son John, and two boarders (15). He was a clerk in an office (15).

On 26 April 1881, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (16, 19).

In 1890, he was living at 1813 Bucknell Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8, 9). He was a bookkeeper (9).

On 1 January 1901, he married Antoinette Zelenka (18).

He died on 16 January 1907, in New York, New York (18, 19).

On 19 September 1907, a minor dependent, Antonie Cloud, applied successfully from New York for a pension (16, 19).

On 29 December 1929, his widow, Antoinette C Cloud, applied successfully from New Jersey [?] for a pension (16, 19).

Antoinette Cloud died on 20 November 1949, in Hackensack, New Jersey (18). (She spent many years in Little Ferry, New Jersey (18). She was a registered midwife (18).)
