Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 7). He was 37 years old when he was enlisted (3, 5 [37 in 1860], 7 [55 at death in 1880]).

In 1860, he was living in ward 19, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was living with his wife Eliza, and with Mary, Rudolph, Anna, and George (presumably their children) (5). He was a laborer, and owned $200 in personal property (5).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 11 October 1861 (1, 3). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3). He was mustered in, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a private in company I (1, 3).

He was discharged on 13 February 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability, at Falmouth, Virginia (1, 2 [12 Feb], 3).

After the war

He died, of chronic diarrhea, on 27 January 1880, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6 [27 Dec], 7 [27 Jan]). He was married (7). He was an 'ostler' [?] [perhaps a hostler?] (7). He died at, or was buried from, Bridge and [illegible] Creek, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). On 28 January 1880, he was buried, in the public burial ground (7).

On 21 October 1890, his widow, Eliza Cotter, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 6).
