Description

He was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and grey hair (9, 10 [light complexion, grey eyes, dark hair]).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 19 August 1862 or 8 August 1861 (1 [8 Aug 61], 9 [19 Aug 62], 10 [19 Aug 62], 11 [19 Aug 62], 13 [8 Aug 63]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Closson (9, 10 [at Harrisburg (?), by Cap Dodge]). He served as a private in company G (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (12).

He was detailed by General Garrard to serve in the ambulance corps on 3 September 1863 (2, 4, 6). He was still there in September (?) 1864 (6).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 30 men who had more than fifteen months to serve who were willing to reenlist (3). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (7).

On 15 April 1864, Lieutenant Colonel Sinex recommended him for a detail, in compliance with general order 18 (8 April 1864) from the Army Headquarters (5). He does not say what the detail was for.

He was discharged near Washington DC, on 30 May 1865 or 1 June 1865, by general order 26, War Department (1, 8 [1 Jun], 11 [30 May], 13 [30 May]).

After the war

In 1890, he was living at 1727 Norwood, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11).

On 13 October 1890, he applied successfully for a pension (13).
