Adam Cornwall

Before the war

He was 20 years old when he was enlisted (3, 4, 10 [67 in 1910], 11 [7 in 1850]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 4, 10, 11).

In 1850, he was living in the 5th ward of Kensington, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with William and Elizabeth Cornwell (presumably his parents), and with Catharine, Sarah, and Elizabeth (presumably his siblings) (11).

When he enlisted, he was a carpenter (3, 4).

Description

He was 5 feet 11 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (3, 4).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 10 January 1864 or 11 January 1864 (1 [10 Jan], 3 [10 Jan], 4 [11 Jan], 5 [11 Jan], 7 [11 Jan], 9 [10 Jan]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Stretch (3, 4). He was mustered by Captain Stretch (3, 4). He served as a private in company B (1).

He was wounded in action (1), on the Mechanicsville Pike, on 2 June 1864 (4).

He was discharged at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania because of those wounds, on surgeon's certificate of disability, on 13 April 1865 (1, 2, 5, 7, 9).

After the war

On 12 May 1865, he successfully applied for a pension (8, 9).

In 1884/85, he married Sally [unknown surname] (10). This was his first marriage, and her second (10). In 1910, she had had four children, all of whom were alive (10).

The 1890 census has two entries for him. According to one, he was living at 234 Allen Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). Sadie Cornwell was also living there (6). According to the other, he was living at 1211 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia (7). He was a fireman (6). He had been wounded in the eye (7). William Cornwell was also living there (6).

In 1910, he was living at 1309 Flora Street, 20th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was a carpenter, and had been out of work 50 weeks in the previous year (10). He was living with his wife Sally, his mother-in-law, and a stepson (10).

He died on 8 April 1922, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9).

On 25 [?] May [?] 1923 [?], his widow, Sallie Cornwell, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 9).
