Henry Couch

Before the war

He was born in New Jersey, probably about 1841/1844, perhaps to George and Elisabeth Couch. [sources: date: 3 (19 in 1863), 7 (30 in 1870), 8 (36 in 1880), 9 (55 in 1900), 10 (78 in 1920), 11 (67 in 1910), 14 (8 in 1850). place: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14. parents: 14]

In 1850, he seems to have been living in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. He was living with George and Elisabeth Couch (perhaps his parents), and with Joseph, Hannah, and Robert Couch (perhaps siblings). [source: 14]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 9 July 1863. He enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company D. [sources: 1, 3, 6 (2 Sep 1862), 15]

He was discharged on 30 December 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability, at the US General Hospital, Frederick, Maryland. He was a private, in company D. [sources: 1, 2 (medical board), 3, 6 (30 Dec 62), 15]

After the war

In 1865/66, he married Maria Somers. She was born on 31 July 1836, in New Jersey, to Nicholas R Somers and Mary Lake. They apparently had one child:

In 1870, he was living in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. He was living with his wife Maria and daughter Mary. He was a mariner. [source: 7]

On 27 January 1879, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 4, 6]

In 1880, he was living in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. He was living with his wife Maria and daughter May. He was a laborer, and had been out of work for three months in the previous year. [source: 8]

In 1890, he was living in Egg Harbor, Atlantic County, New Jersey (5).

In 1900, he was living in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. He was living with his wife Mariah and daughter Mary Soudr. He was a sailor. [source: 9]

On 29 March 1909, his wife, Maria Couch, died. She was buried at the Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Bargaintown, Atlantic County, New Jersey. [sources: 12, 13]

In 1910, he was living at 98 Germany Avenue, ward 5, Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey. He was living with his daughter, Mary Souder. He was widowed. He was a laborer, working odd jobs, and had been out of work 40 weeks the previous year. [source: 11]

He again applied for a pension on 3 September [?] 1911. [source: 6]

In 1920, he was living in ward 5, Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey. He was living with his daughter Mary Souder. He was not working. [source: 10]

He died on 21 [?] November 1923, at Bridgeton, [Cumberland County,] New Jersey. [source: 6]
