George J Crouse

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6, 8, 10, 11). He was 44 years old when he was enlisted (6, 7, 8, 10 [44 in 1860], 11 [63 in 1880]).

In 1860, he was living in the 19th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was a blacksmith (10). He was living with his wife Julianna, and eight other people (presumably their children) (10).

He was a smith [?] when he was enlisted (8).

Description

He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and grey hair (6, 7, 8).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 15 October 1861 (1, 6, 7, 8). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner (6, 7, 8). He was mustered in, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a private in company K, by Captain Bell (1, 6, 7, 8).

On 26 April 1862, he deserted from Carroll Barracks, Washington DC (5). On 20 August 1863, he was reported regained from desertion (3, 5).

On 5 September 1863, he was sentenced to make good all time lost by desertion, to forfeit all pay and allowances that were due him or would become due him, except for necessary food and clothing, and to work at hard labor for two hours each day for the remainder of his service (2).

On 30 April 1865, he was reported absent at Fort Delaware, "SGM" [probably sentence of general [court] martial] (13).

On 27 April 1865, he was dishonorably discharged by general order #191 (7). (According to a crossed-out entry on the 10 June 1864 morning report, he was dropped from the rolls because of something about the sentence (see also 5). According to Bates, he was not accounted for when the regiment mustered out (1).)

After the war

In 1880, he was living in Camden, New Jersey (11). He was a blacksmith (11). He was living with his wife Julia, and his children Joseph, Julia, Josephine, and Henry (11).

On 24 October 1892, his widow, Juliann Crouse, applied unsuccessfully from New Jersey for a pension (9, 12).
