Philip Demmel

Before the war

He was born in February 1844 (15). He was born in Germany (6, 10, 11, 13 [Bavaria], 14 [PA], 15). He was 18 years old when he was enlisted (6, 8, 10, 11, 13 [16 in 1860], 14 [26 in 1870], 15 [56 in 1900]).

He immigrated to the United States in 1846 (15).

In 1860, he was living in Birmingham Borough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with Philip and Elizabeth Roslion [?] and others (13).

He was a painter (or possibly a glas[sblower?]) when he was enlisted (6, 8 [printer], 10 [painter], 11 [painter]). He was living at Birmingham, Pennsylvania (8).

Description

He was 5 feet 8 [or 9] inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey [or dark] eyes, and dark hair (6, 8 [5'9", dark eyes], 11 [5'8", dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair]).

During the war

He was enlisted on 29 July 1861, at Alleghany County, Pennsylvania (8). He was mustered into service on 29 August 1861, as a corporal, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (8).

He was reenlisted and mustered into service on 27 or 28 December 1863 in the 62nd Pennsylvania (1, 6 [27 Dec], 7 [28 Dec], 8 [28 Dec], 10 [27 Dec], 11 [27 Dec], 17). He was reenlisted for three years, at Licken Run, Virginia, by Lieutenant S [?] M Adams (6, 10, 11). He was mustered into service by Captain Barnard (6, 10, 11).

He was transferred on 20 July 1864 from company L of the 62nd Pennsylvania to the 91st (1, 6, 7, 8). On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G (2). On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company (3, 9). He was then present, as a private, on duty as a teamster in the brigade commissary (3). He served in company K (1).

On 27 April 1865, he was promoted to corporal, effective 1 April 1865 (4, 9).

On 28 June 1865 (?), he began a furlough, which expired some time in June (5). He returned on "27" 65" (5).

He mustered out, as a corporal, on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 17).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Birmingham, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with Mary (presumably his wife) and George (presumably their son) (14). He was a policeman, and owned $500 in personal property.

In 1890, he was living at 2701 Jane Street, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (16).

On 28 January 1895, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (12, 17).

In 1900, he was living at 2706 Jane [??] Street, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (15). He was living with his son George and George's family (15). He was a detectice (15).

On 23 February 1907, he again applied for a pension (17).
