Jeremiah Derr

Before the war

He was born in Milton, Pennsylvania (4, 7, 8, 9, 10). He was born in May 1845 (9). He was 19 years old when he was enlisted (2, 4, 7 [14 in 1860], 8 [35 in 1880], 9 [55 in 1900], 10 [65 in 1910]).

In 1860, he was living in Chillisquaque Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with Philip Derr (presumably his father), six probably siblings, and two other apparently unrelated people (7).

He was a boatman when he was enlisted (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, light eyes, and dark hair (4).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 18 or 22 October 1861 (1, 2, 4 [18 Oct], 5 [18 Oct], 11 [18 Oct]). He was enlisted for three years, by Lieutenant Gregory, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, or Milton, Pennsylvania (2 [Philadelphia], 4 [Milton]). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2). He served in company F (1, 6).

He was promoted to corporal, probably on 1 January 1863, though possibly on 1 June 1863 (1, 2, 3 [1 Jan], 4 [1 Jan]).

He was transferred to company B of the 24th Veterans' Reserve Corps on 15 February 1864 (1, 2, 4, 6, 11).

He was discharged on 18 October 1864 (5, 11).

He also served in company D of the 1st US Veteran Volunteers (5, 6, 11). He enlisted on 23 January 1865 (5). He was discharged on 23 January 1865 (5).

After the war

In 1864 or 1865, he married Annie [unknown surname] (9, 10). In 1900, she had had seven children, five of whom were alive (9). In 1910, only four of them were alive (10).

On 19 May 1877, he successfully applied for a pension (6, 11).

In 1880, he was living in Chillisquaque, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Annie, and children William, Philip, and Charles (8). He was a laborer (8).

In 1890, he was living in Chillisquaque, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (post office Milton) (5). He had a hernia and hearing problems (5).

In 1900, he was living in Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Annie and children William, Charles, Rosa, and James (9). He was a day laborer (9).

On 12 March 1908, he again applied for a pension (11).

In 1910, he was living at 515 South Front Street, Milton Borough, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Anna, and his daughter Rosa and her family (10). He was a house plasterer(10).

On 26 November 1914, he died, at Milton, Pennsylvania (11).
