Description

He was 5 feet tall, and had a light complexion, brown eyes, and light hair (8 [5'4-1/2", probably in 1863], 9 [5']).

He was an ivory-turner when he was enlisted (9).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 19 September 1861 (1, 9, 13). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was mustered in as a musician, in company I, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 9).

On 1 November 1863, he was reported regained from missing in action (6).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (1, 7, 9). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (8, 9).

On 30 July 1864 he was ordered to report to the Fifth Corp Hospital at City Point (2, 3, 5 [1 Aug], 10). The detail was to report to brigade headquarters at 8 am on 1 August 1864 (3). He was still detailed as a nurse in September (?) 1864 (5).

On 28 June 1865, he went on a furlough, which expired on 13 July 1865 (4).

He was absent, on furlough, when the regiment mustered out (1, 8 [discharged on muster-out rolls], 9, 13 [discharged 9 July 1865]).

After the war

On 31 January 1882, he applied successfully for a pension (11, 13).

In 1890, he was living on Charles Street, in Gloucester City, Camden County, New Jersey (12).

On 16 April 1907, he again applied for a pension (13).

He died on 9 April 1917, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13).

On 9 April 1917, his widow, Rebecca S Dougherty, applied successfully from New Jersey for a pension (11, 13).
