William Dougherty

Before the war

He was 39 when he enlisted (4 [42 in 1863], 10). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 10).

He was a teamster (4, 10). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (10).

Description

He was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (4, 10 [5'11", dark complexion, gray eyes, brown hair]).

During the war

He was enrolled and mustered into service as a private in company E on 21 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 10).

He fought at the battle of Gettysburg (7).

He may have been placed under arrest on 27 August 1863, by William Carpenter (8). If so, he was released on 30 August 1863 (9).

He re-enlisted for three years, as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 4, 10 [26 Dec]). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Carpenter, and mustered into service by Lieutenant Swann (perhaps relating to his original enlistment?) (4).

He was promoted to corporal on 18 September 1864, for soldierly conduct (bravery on the battlefield) (3, 4, 5 [16 September]).

He was killed in action on 27 October 1864 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia (1, 3), while charging the enemy's works (2, 10, 11). He was shot through the thigh; before he could be taken off the field, he was shot through the head (4).

After the war

His widow, Anna B Dougherty, applied successfully for a pension on 26 January 1865 (6, 12).
