He was in the Confederate service (3).

He was a substitute (1, 3). He was enlisted and mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 8 July 1863 (1, 3 [31 Ju]ly]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, by Captain Shett (3).

He was on detached duty at Camp Chase, perhaps beginning 19 September 1863 (3).

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry to the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 2). He served as a private in company I of the 91st Pennsylvania (1).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1).
