John Q Dyke

Before the war

John Q Dyke was living in Philadelphia in 1860 (6). He was a painter, and owned $100 in personal property (6). He was 45 years old, and had been born in Massachusetts (6). He was living with Margaret Dyke, presumably his wife, who was 47 years old and had been born in Pennsylvania (6). They were living with five younger people, presumably their children (6):

During the war

He was mustered into service as the quartermaster sergeant, on 4 December 1861 (1; see also 9).

He was promoted on 24 May 1862 to second lieutenant of company H, replacing Charles Henry (1, 5, 7).

On 29 June 1862, he, along with the other commissioned officers in the regiment (except Colonel Gregory), signed a statement denying accusations that they were on the verge of open mutiny, that the regiment had been reduced to 400 men, and that Colonel Gregory was too lenient to Confederates and too harsh to men in the regiment (8).

He resigned on 30 December 1862, on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 5 [28 Dec], 7).

After the war

He applied unsuccessfully for a pension on 22 December 1868 (4, 11). (Perhaps the date of death in the on-line interment index [see the next paragraph] is correct, and his widow filed the incorrect form.)

He died on 29 January 1864, and was buried in the Philadelphia National Cemetery (3).

His widow, Margaret Dyke, applied successfully for a pension on 5 March 1869 (4, 11).
