William H H Dyke

Before the war

He may have been born in March 1835 (17). He was born in Baltimore, Maryland (11, 15, 16 [PA], 17 [PA], 19). He was 23 years old when he was enlisted (11, 15 [30 in 1870], 16 [39 in 1880], 17 [65 in 1900], 19 [62 in 1901]).

He was a paint[er] when he was enlisted (11).

Description

He was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (11).

During the war

He also served in company B of the 4th Pennsylvania Infantry (13, 18). He also served in company B of the 20th Pennsylvania Infantry (13, 18).

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 18 September 1862 (1, 11, 12). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory (11). He was mustered in as a private in company H, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Pierce (1, 11). He was paid $29 in bounty and premium (11).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (14).

On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Anapolis, Maryland, and was unofficially believed to be able to rejoin the regiment (2).

He returned to the regiment from hospital on 12 December 1863 (7).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 30 men who had more than fifteen months to serve who were willing to reenlist (3). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (8).

On 6 October 1864, he was promoted to corporal (4).

On 5 November 1864, he was promoted to second sergeant, effective 3 November 1864 (5, 9 [14 Nov, also has 4th sgt, Nov 64]).

On 25 January 1865, he went on a furlough, which ended on 9 February 1865 (6).

He was discharged, as a sergeant, near Washington, DC, on 30 May 1865 or 1 or 3 June 1865 by general order, War Department (1, 10 [3 Jun], 11 [1 Jun], 12).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was a coach painter (15). He was living with Annie (presumably his wife) and William (presumably their son) (15).

He may have married Elizabeth [unknown surname] in 1869/70 (17). In 1900, she had had one child, who was not alive (17).

In 1880, he may have been living at 1617 Annboy Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). (Note that this William Dyke was born in Pennsylvania, not Maryland, and is married to Eliza, unlike the William Dyke in the 1870 census.) If so, he was a coach painter (16). This William Dyke was living with his wife Eliza, and his daughter Elizabeth Duffy and her family (16).

In 1890, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12).

On 7 April 1892, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (13, 18).

In 1900, he may have been living at 1605 Lawn, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). (Note that this William Dyke was born in Pennsylvania, not Maryland, and is married to Elizabeth, unlike the William Dyke in the 1870 census.) If so, he was a carriage painter, and was living with his wife Elizabeth (17).

On 27 August 1901, he died, of a cerebral hemorrhage (19). He died at Hahnemann Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (19). He was married, and was a painter (19). He was buried on 31 August 1901, at Odd Fellows' Cemetery (19). He was buried from 2451 North 29th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (19).

On 20 September 1901, his widow, Elizabeth Dyke, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (13, 18).
