Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6, 10, 11). He was 27 years old when he was enlisted (6, 10 [56 in 1890], 11 [40 in 1880).

Description

He was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (6).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 17 September 1861 (1, 6). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He served in company H (1).

He was appointed first sergeant on 25 October 1861, replacing Charles Henry (5).

He had gun number 38 (5).

He was promoted on 14 or 18 May 1862 from first sergeant to second lieutenant (1 [18 May], 2 [14 May], 5 [no date]).

He resigned on 22 May 1862 (1, 2, 5, 6 [dismissed]). He had served for eight months (10).

He also served in companies A and E of the 12th New Jersey Infantry (7, 10). He served for eighteen months (10).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky (8). He was a plasterer, and owned $2000 in real estate (8). He was living with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Lillie (8).

In 1880, he was living in Dog Fennel, Fayette County, Kentucky (11). He was a gardener (11). He was living with his wife Elizabeth and daugther Mary (11).

On 5 September 1888, he applied successfully from Washington, DC, for a pension (7, 12).

On 4 November 1890, he was admitted to the National Home (10). He was admitted from New Jersey (10). He had a gunshot wound to his head (10).

He was a member of the Thomas A Sharp, Post #2, of the Grand Army of the Republic, in Millville, New Jersey (3). He died in "11/18" (November 1918? or November 18th?) (3).

In 1900, his widow Elizabeth was living at 413 Third Street, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee (9). She was living with her brother Noah Morrow, and his niece (her daughter?) Mary E Hilton (9). She had had one child, who was still living (9).

On 6 July 1903 (!), he was discharged from the Southern Branch of the National Home (10). He was receiving a pension of $12 per month (10).

On 20 February 1907, he again applied for a pension (12).

He died on 18 November 1914, at Chester, Pennsylvania (12).

On 18 June [?] 1914 [??], his widow, Elizabeth R Eastwick, applied unsuccessfully from Tennessee for a pension (7).
