Israel Eberly

Before the war

He was born in January 1836 (8). He was 20 years old when he enlisted (2, 6 [35 in 1870], 7 [47 in 1880], 8 [64 in 1900]. 9 [73 in 1910], 10 [20 in 1850], 11 [22 in 1860]). He was born in Pennsylvania (2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11).

In 1850, he seems to have been living in Elizabeth, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (10). He was a laborer (10). He was living with Michael and Elizabeth Eberly (presumably his parents), and Michael and Abraham (presumably his siblings) (10).

In 1857/59, he married Harriet [unknown surname] (8). She had eight children, four of whom were alive in 1900 and 1910 (8).

In 1860, he was living in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Harriet, and with John Eberly (11). He was a potter, and owned $200 in personal property (11).

When he enlisted, he was a railroad employee (2).

Description

He was 5 feet 11 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private for three years in the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on 18 July 1863, at Lancaster, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3 [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania], 5). He served in company K (3).

He was transferred to company E of the 91st PA on 2 June 1865, by special order 138 headquarters Army of the Potomac (dated 1 June 1865) (1, 2, 3). He had received an advance bounty of $25, and was due $75 (2). He had last settled his account on 31 August 1864, and had drawn $63.09 in clothing since (2). He had last been paid, by Major Holman, on 31 December 1864 (2).

He was mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 5).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Cayahuga [?] Falls, Summit County, Ohio (6). He was living with his wife Harriet, his sons Abraham and Charles, and with Louisa Patterson (6). He was working in a pottery, and owned $1,000 in real estate and $100 in personal property (6).

In 1880, he was living at 114 Coburn Street, Akron, Summit County, Ohio (7). He was a well digger (7). He was living with his wife Harriet and children Abraham, Charles, Harry, and William (7).

He applied successfully from Ohio for a pension on 19 December 1883 (3, 12).

In 1890, he was living in the 5th ward of Akron, Summit County, Ohio, at 113 Coburn Street (5).

In 1900, he was living at 113 Coburn Street, Akron, Summit County, Ohio (8). He was a well driller, and had been out of work seven months in the previous year (8). He was living with his wife Harriet, and children Charles, Harry, and William (8).

On 15 July 1909 [?], he again applied for a pension (12).

In 1910, he was living at 659 Coburn Street, Akron, Summit County, Ohio (9). He was living on his own income (9). He was living with his wife Harriet and son Charles (9).

He died on 7 March 1911 (12).

His widow, Harriet Eberly, applied successfully from Ohio for a pension on 15 March 1911 (3, 12).
