Henry Elliott

Before the war

He was 22 years old when he enlisted, and had been born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania (2). He was a butcher (2).

Description

He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He served in company H of the 17th Pennsylvania Infantry (5, 6, 7, 8). The company mustered in on 25 April 1861 at Philadelphia (6 [20 Apr 61], 7). The regiment was mustered out of service on 2 August 1861, at Philadelphia (7).

He enlisted and was mustered into service in company E on 21 August 1861 (1, 6, 8). He was enlisted by Captain Lentz, for 3 years (2). He was mustered in by Colonel Reiff (2). He was appointed sergeant on 10 September 1861 (3).

(According to the list of corporals in (3) (Francis O Dell's entry), Elliott was reduced [to the ranks]. Since none of the other sources say that, I'm inclined not to trust it.)

He was discharged on 28 November 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability, at a camp near Falmouth, Virginia (1, 2, 3, 4, 8 [27 Nov]).

After the war

He applied successfully for a pension on 17 December 1870 (5, 8).

In 1890, he was living in Monroe Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey (post office Williamstown) (6). He was ruptured and crushed at [illegible] (6).

On 3 April 1907, he again applied for a pension (8).

He died on 13 May 1919, at Camden, New Jersey (8).

His widow, Mary A Elliott, applied successfully from New Jersey for a pension on 26 June 1919 (5, 8).
