Henry Ellwanger

Before the war

He was born in Pennsylvania (3, 6, 12). He was born in January 1846 (6). He was 18 years old when he was enlisted (3, 8 [26 in 1870], 12 [85 in 1930], 14 [65 in 1910], 15 [73 in 1920]).

He was a farmer when he was enlisted (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (3).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 3). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 20 March 1865 (1, 3, 4 [Apr 1865], 11). He was enlisted for one year, at Williamsport, Pennsylvania, by Captain Blair (3). He served as a private in company H (1).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 4, 11).

After the war

He married Maria [Marie? Mary?] [unknown surname] in 1865/1866 (6). They had at least four children (6, 8, 9):

They moved from Pennsylvania to Iowa sometime between 1865/66 and 1867/68 (8).

In 1870, he was living in Marion Township, Marshall County, Iowa, with his wife and their children Harvey and Mary (8). He was a farm laborer, and owned $725 in personal property (8).

He was a member of the Nebraska Grand Army of the Republic, post 310, in Rushville, Sheridan County, Nebraska (2).

On 6 April 1888, he applied successfully from Nebraska for a pension (5, 11).

In 1890, he was living in Clinton, Sheridan County, Nebraska (3).

In 1893, he was living in Pine Ridge, Nebraska (7).

In 1900, he was living in White Clay Precinct, Sheridan County, Nebraska (6). He was a farmer (6). He was living with his wife, Maria [Marie?], and their daughter Sadie (6). Maria had had seven [?] children, two of whom were alive (6).

On 25 March 1908, he again applied for a pension (11).

In 1910, his widow, Mary E Ellwanger, was living on Highland Avenue, in National City Township, San Diego County, California (10). She was a farmer, on her own farm (10). She was living with her daughter, Sadie Geery (a widow), and grandson Henry Geery (10).

In 1910, he was living with his son H S Ellwanger (and two grandchildren) (14). He was a cook for a railroad camp (14).

In 1920, he was living on a farm, on Woolman Avenue, San Diego Township, San Diego County, California (15). He was a gardiner, in his own garden (15). His children, Sadie Miller and Henry S Ellwanger seem to have been living at 2092 7th Avenue, National City, San Diego County, California (13).

In 1930, he was living on 7th Avenue, National City, San Diego County, California (12). He was living with his daughter, Sadie Miller (12). He was widowed, and was not working (12).

He died on 19 April 1931, at National City, California (11).
