Charles M Evans

Before the war

He was 26 years old when he was enlisted (5). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5).

Description

He was 5 feet 11-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and black hair (5). He had a scar on his right groin, and a blue anchor on his left arm (5).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 20 August 1861 (1) or 24 August 1861 (5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff (5, 6). He served in company C, initially as a private (1).

He was appointed fifth sergeant on 21 September 1861 (2). He was reduced to the ranks on 24 December 1861 (2, 3).

The company C register of deserters lists him as deserting on 8 October 1862, at Alexandria, Virginia (4). However, it also reports him as discharged on surgeon's certificate (4), and the descriptive roll lists him as "discharged" (5). Perhaps the desertion report was a mistake, or perhaps he returned.

He was discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability (1).

He also served in company G of the 34th New York Infantry (7). He also served in company F of the 7th US Veteran Volunteers (7).

After the war

On 11 May 1870, his widow applied successfully for a pension (7).
