John Falls (in companies H and K), alias John Kelly

Note

The John Falls in companies A and H seems to be a different person. This isn't clear, because of the order transferring John Falls from company A to company H (16 February 1864). Unfortunately, his pension card lists only service in company A, and the company A descriptive book does not mention the transfer. But there are two different pension cards, listing different pension application and certificate numbers, and the two men mustered in on different dates and had a different status when the regiment mustered out.

Because of the evidence (from the pension index) that the John Falls in company H enlisted under the alias John Kelly, I have assumed that all references to John Falls are to the John Falls who initially served in company A. However, this isn't complete clear, either: Bates (1) has a John Falls in company K, who was transferred to company H, and the Pennsylvania State Archives Civil War Service Cards record the man in company H and K as John Falls. <sigh> Further, this John Falls, but not the John Falls who served initially in company A, was a musician.

Unfortunately, the John Falls (A) in the Philadelphia National Cemetery was buried on 4 April 1891, and John Falls (H) was also interred on 4 April 1891 (in Palmer Vault). This strongly suggests that either they are the same person, or I have misidentified one of them.

I have reported other problems with the data below.

Name

According to the pension index (2, 3), John Falls went by an alias, John Kelley. Bates (1) has a John Kelley in company H, who enlisted on the same day as John Falls, and who was not on the muster-out roll. I assume he initially enlisted under the alias, and then reverted to his real name. (The company A descriptive book doesn't mention the transfer--so I'm not confident this is right.)

Bates (1) also has a John Kelly in company D, who enlisted on the same day, and was not on the muster-out roll (1). (The pension index by regiment also includes a John Kelly in company D, who also served in company H.)

Before the war

He was born in Monaghan [?], Ireland (10, 15). He was 36 years old when he was enrolled (4, 6 [25], 10, 15 [71 at death in 1891]).

Description

He was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (10).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 24 September 1861 (1, 4, 6, 7 [24 Dec 61], 9, 10). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 6, 10). He was mustered in as a private, in company D, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 4, 6, 14).

He was transferred on 31 October 1861, probably to company K (5).

He was transferred on 24 December 1861 to company H (1, 4, 6 has him transferred from H to D, 9, 11).

He was promoted to musician (4).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (12).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 31 December 1863 (1, 4).

On 1 August 1864, he was detailed as nurse at the corps hospital at City Point, Virginia (12).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 4, 7). He was then a musician (13).

After the war

On 30 October 1884, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (2, 3, 13, 14).

In 1890, he was living at 2106 North Second Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 8). The city directory does not record an occupation for him (8).

On 31 March 1891, he died, of valvular heart disease (15). He died at, or was buried from, 2106 North 2nd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was a gentleman (15). He was married (15). He was buried on 4 April 1891, in the Palmer Vault (15).

On 8 April 1891, his widow, Eliza Falls, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (2, 3, 13, 14).
