The descriptive roll has this remark: "Foltz instead of Shultz given when mustered in". Presumably this means he gave the name 'Shultz' when he mustered in, but was really named 'Foltz'.
He was 29 years old when he was enlisted (6, 7 [31, probably in 1863], 10 [27 in 1860], 11 [46 in 1880], 16 [49 at death in 1883]). He was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (6, 7, 10, 11, 16 [Philadelphia PA]).
In 1860, he was living in the 19th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Margaret, and four children (presumably theirs) (10). He was a scourer (10).
He was a scourer when he was enlisted (6, 7).
He was 5 feet 7-1/8 inches tall, and had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and dark brown hair (6, 7 [5'7", dark hair]).
He was enlisted and mustered into service on 19 November 1861 (1, 6, 7, 8 [10 Nov]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Gilbert [?] (6, 7 [Lentz]). He served as a private in company G (1).
He later testified that John Langerbartel contracted bronchitis in March or April 1863 (15).
He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (13).
On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist (3). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (4).
He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia--the only man in company G to be wounded then--by a ball that had passed through another man's head (1, 2).
He mustered out at camp in the field, near Pegram House, Virginia, on 2 December 1864 or perhaps 19 November 1864 when his term expired (1 [19 Nov], 5 [2 Dec], 6 [2 (?) Dec], 7 [19 Nov], 8 [20 Dec], 12, 15 [19 Nov]).
On 19 June 1869, he applied successfully for a pension (9, 14).
In 1880, he was living at rear [unknown number], Hoope [?] Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Margaret and children Daniel, Andrew, and Frederick (11). He was a blacksmith's helper (11).
He died on 1 January 1883, of inflammation of knee joint [sic], at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14, 16). He was married (16). His death certificate does not list an occupation (16). He died at, or was buried from, rear 1236 North Front Street (16). On 4 January, he was buried at Hanover Vault (16).
In 1890, his widow, Margaret Foltz, was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). He was wounded at Chancellorsville (8).
On 10 July 1890, his widow, Margaret Foltz, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (9, 14).
