William Foote

Before the war

He was 21 years old when he enlisted in 1864 (2, 9 [42 [sic] in 1900]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 9).

When he enlisted, he was a moulder (2).

Description

He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He served in company G [?] of the 60th Pennsylvania (5 [60th PA Mil Inf], 6 [60 PV]) He was mustered in on 1 July 1863, and was discharged on 8 September 1863 (6).

He was a recruit (that is, a volunteer) (2). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 4 February 1864 (1, 2, 6). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for three years, by Lieutenant Shipley (2). He was mustered in as a private in company E, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and mustered into service by Lieutenant Burke (1, 2).

He was detailed as mounted messenger at the 5th Corps headquarters, on 5 June 1865 (3). He was relieved from that duty on 9 June 1865 (4).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 6).

After the war

In 1881/82, he married Kate Bastian (9). In 1900, she reported having had one child, who was still living (9):

In 1890, he was living at 1121 Dickinson, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6, 7). He was an inspector (7).

He applied successfully for a pension on 12 September 1891 (5, 11).

In 1900, he was living at 1121 Dickinson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with Joseph and Eliza Bastian (his parents-in-law), his wife Kate, and his daughter Anna (9). He was a machinist laborer (9).

He again applied for a pension on 16 February 1907 (11).

He died in 1907 (11).

His widow, Kate P Foote, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 9 February 1909 (5, 11).

In 1920, his widow, Kate P Foote, was living at 4510 Smedley Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). She was living with her daughter Anna, and Anna's husband and daughter (10).

According to one internet site, he died in 1921 (8). The other available evidence suggests he died earlier. He was buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (8).
