Andrew Jackson Friend

Before the war

He was born on 17 April 1836, to Andrew B Friend and Rebecca Parent (19, 21). He was 26 years old when he was enrolled (10, 12 [29 probably at reenlistment], 16 [78 in 1914], 17 [24 in 1860], 18 [40 in 1880]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12, 17, 18, 19).

In 1857/58, he married Elizabeth Hughes (perhaps Mary Elizabeth?) (16, 19). In 1900, she had had nine children, five of whom were alive (19).

In 1860, he was living in the first ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). He was living with his wife Mary and son Andrew (17). He was a laborer, and owned $50 in personal property (17).

When he enlisted, he was a painter (10; 12 seems to begin 'Coa'). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enrolled (10).

Description

He was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair (10 [5'9", fair complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair], 12 [5'9-1/2", light complexion, hazel eyes, light hair]). He had a heavy scar on his left leg (12).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 23 October 1861 (1, 10, 12). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Keyser (10, 12). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He initially served as a private in company B (1, 20).

He was transferred to company C (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (15).

He was probably absent on leave from about 17 August 1863 through 21 August 1863 (7, 8). He was reported absent without leave on 22 August 1863 (6). He returned on 26 August 1863 (9).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 10).

On 23 September 1864, he was promoted to corporal, effective 1 September 1864 (2).

He went on a ten-day furlough on 23 October 1864 (4, 14). It was scheduled to end on 2 November 1864, but was extended to 10 November 1864 (4). He returned (4).

On 26 March 1865, he was promoted to sergeant from corporal, effective 1 March 1865 (1, 3, 10, 11).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 10).

After the war

In 1880, he was living on Martins Village, in the first ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (18). He was living with his wife Mary, and his children Andrew, Charles, Grant, Thomas, Rebecca, and Annie (18). He was a laborer (18).

He successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension on 10 September 1890, and again on 19 February 1907 (5, 13, 20).

In 1900, he was living at 1736 South Water Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (19). He was living with his wife Mary, son Andrew, granddaughter Catherine Hinds, and adopted daughter Annie Naphey [?] (19). He was a coach painter (19).

He died at 4.30 AM, on 24 April 1914, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of cystitis, with enlarged prostate as a contributary cause (13, 16, 20, 21). He was a coach painter then (21). The funeral was held on Monday at 148 Mifflin Street (his residence) (16). Members of General J F Reynolds Post, Number 71, GAR were invited to attend (16). He was buried at Fernwood Cemetery (16, 21).

On 30 April 1914, his widow, Mary E Friend, successfully applied for a pension (5, 13, 20).
