Before the war

He was 23 years old when he was enrolled (11 [45 in 1880], 17, 18, 19, 21 [23 in 1860], 22 [35 in 1870], 26 [59 in ?1888], 27 [59 in ?1888], 28 [59 in ?1888], 29 [59 in 1905], 30 [60 in ?1888]). He was born in Ireland (11, 19, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30).

He married Elizabeth [unknown surname]. In 1910, she had had five children, three of whom were alive (23).

In 1860, he was living in the 26th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (21). He was living with Elizabeth Gamble (presumably his wife), and James and William Gamble (presumably their sons) (21). He was a day laborer, and owned $50 in personal property (21).

He was a laborer (17, 18, 19). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enrolled (17).

Description

He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (17, 18, 19).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service as a private on 22 November 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 17). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Bowman (16). He served in company B (1, 16).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (24).

He was detailed as teamster on 22 September 1863 (7, 12), and had not returned on 25 September 1863 (4).

On 6 October 1863, he went on furlough (13).

He became Morris Kayser's cook on 23 October 1863 (5 [28 Oct], 6 [28 Oct], 14), and was still his cook on 14 November 1863 (5), and 30 December (6).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 17, 18 [25 Dec], 19 [25 Dec]). He was enlisted for three years by Lieutenant Carpenter, and was mustered by Lieutenant Swan (18, 19).

He was promoted to corporal on 13 March 1864 (8, 15).

He was wounded in the foot on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia, while carrying the 91st's flag (1, 2, 3, 17, 18, 19). Lieutenant Colonel Sellers said he deserved a medal of honor "for conspicuous gallantry" while carrying the flag, which he apparently did not receive (2).

On 7 January 1865, he was promoted to sergeant, perhaps effective 1 January (9).

He was discharged on 25 January 1865 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 17, 19 [by order of Maj Gen Augur [?], 25). He had served for 42 months (26, 27, 28, 29, 30).

After the war

He successfully applied for a pension on 17 February 1865 (10, 20).

In 1870, he was living in Hatfield Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (22). He was living with his wife Elizabeth, and children Edward, William, Maria, and Mary (22). He was a farmer, who owned $700 in personal property (22).

In 1880, he was living at 1812 Harlan Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was a car driver (11). He was living with his wife, Elizabeth Gamble, and his children Edward, William, and Maria (11).

On 21 July 1888, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (26, 27, 28, 29 [21 July 1882], 30 [27 Jul 1888]). He was admitted from Pennsylvania (26, 27, 28, 29, 30). He had a gunshot wound in his left arm (26, 27, 28 ['wnd o'], 30). He was receiving a pension of $8 per month (27).

In 1890, he was present at the Marion Branch of the National Soldiers' Home (30). He was receiving a pension of $8 per month (30). He had a gunshot wound in his arm (30).

In 1893, he was present at the Central Branch (28). He was receiving a pension of $12 per month (28).

In 1895, he was present at the Central Branch of the National Soldiers Home (26). He was receiving a pension of $12 per month (26).

In 1905, he was receiving a pension of $12 per month (29). He had a gunshot wound in his left arm (29). He was at the Central Branch of the National Home (29).

He died on 21 July 1904 (29).

On 3 April 1907, his widow, Elizabeth Gamble, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (10, 20).

In 1910, his widow, Elizabeth Gamble, was living at 1920 West Oxford Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (23). She was living with her son William (23). She was a washerwoman (23).
