Andrew Gradwohl

Before the war

He was born on 14 March 1828 (8, 12). He was 37 years old when he was enlisted (4, 7 [42 in 1870], 3 [52 in 1880], 8 [72 in 1900], 10 [79 in 1907]). He was born in Wurtemburg, Germany (3, 4, 7, 8). The Andrew Gradwohl in the 1880 census was 52 years old in 1880, and had been born in Wurtemberg (3).

In 1852 or 1853, he married Elizabeth B [unknown surname] (8). In 1900, she had had six children, five of whom were alive (8). In 1910, she had had seven children, four of whom were alive (9).

He was a laborer when he was enlisted (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 2-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and black hair (4).

During the war

He was drafted from Gwynedd, Pennsylvania (1, 4). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 2 March 1865 (1, 4, 5). He was enlisted for one year, at Norristown, Pennsylvania, by Captain Yerkes (4). He served as a private in company G (1).

He received clothing worth $36.82 (4).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 5).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Gwynedd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife ELizabeth, and six children (presumably theirs) (7). He was a farmer, and owned $500 in real estate and $100 in personal property (7).

In 1880, he was living in Gwynedd Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (3). He was living with his wife Elizabeth and children Louisa, Jacob, and Andrew (3). He was a farm laborer (3).

He was a member of the Colonel Edwin Schall Post, number 296, Department of Pennsylvania, Grand Army of the Republic, from Lansdale, Pennsylvania (2). He was not a charter member, but joined some time after it was formed, on 10 November 1882 (2).

In 1890, he was living in Gwynedd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (post office: Hoyt) (5).

On 30 July 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 11).

In 1900, he was living in Lower Gwynedd Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Elizabeth (8). He was a farmer (8).

On 26 January 1907, he died (10). The funeral was held on Wednesday, from his residence, in Gwynedd, Pennsylvania (10). Members of the Colonel Edward Shaw Post, number 290, GAR, were invited to attend (10). He was buried in Pleasantville Reformed Church Cemetery, Chalfont, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (10, 12).

On 17 July 1907, his widow, Elizabeth Gradwohl, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 11).

In 1910, his widow, Elizabeth Gradwohl, was living on Buchtown Road, Lower Gwynedd Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (9). She was living with her son Jacob and grandson Henry (9).
