William P Hagerman

Before the war

He was 35 years old when he was enlisted (6). He was 38 years old when he was reenlisted in 1863 (7, 13 [54 in 1880]). He was born in Easton, Pennsylvania (6, 7, 13 [New Jersey]).

He was a cooper (6, 7).

Description

He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair (6, 7).

During the war

He also served in company E of the 47th Pennsylvania Infantry and company D of the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry (11, 14).

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 15 September 1861 (1, 6, 8 [Aug 61]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He served in company D (1).

According to the company descriptive roll, he was transferred by regimental order, presumably from one company to another (6). I have seen no other records that mention this.

He was wounded on 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (12).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (1, 7, 8). He was reenlisted for three years, at Bealton Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (7).

On 17 February 1864, he was reported deserted (4).

He was promoted to corporal effective 1 March 1864 (5, 7).

On (effective?) 20 October 1864, he was reduced to the ranks for being absent without leave (2, 9). On 23 October 1864, he was reported returned from being absent without leave, and in arrest (10).

He entered Emory Hospital on 30 October 1864 (7).

On 17 December 1864, he was restored to his former rank of corporal, effective 1 November 1864 (3).

He was absent, sick, when the regiment mustered out (1). He was then a corporal (1).

He was discharged on 20 July 1865 (8).

After the war

On 13 August 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (11, 14).

In 1880, he was living in Hope Village, Warren County, New Jersey (13). He was living with his wife Susan (13). He was a cooper (13).

In 1890, he was living in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (8). He had a bullet wound in his right leg (8).

On 13 May 1897, he died (14).

On 2 June [?] 1892 [?], his widow, Sarah M Hagerman, applied successfully from New Jersey for a pension (11, 14).
