George Mifflin Dallas Haines

Before the war

He was born in February 1845 (13). He was 19 years old when he was enlisted (5, 9 [60 at death in 1904], 10 [35 in 1880], 12 [25 in 1870], 13 [55 in 1900], 16 [59 yrs 8 mos 19 (?) days at death]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 10, 12, 13, 16).

He was a hatter when he was enlisted (5).

Description

He was 5 feet 4-3/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, gray eyes, and black hair (5).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 26 December 1861 (1, 5, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Sellers (5). He served in company G (1).

He was promoted to sixth corporal on 3 September 1862 (3).

He was transferred on 5 January 1863 to the regular army (cavalry), by order 154, War Department, 25 October [1862?] (1, 3, 4, 5). He was then a corporal (1, 4). He served in company I of the 2nd US Cavalry (6, 8 [co.I?], 11). He was discharged on 26 December 1864 (6).

After the war

In 1868/69, he married Caroline [unknown surname] (13). In 1900, she reported having had 1 child, who was still living (13). In 1910, she reported having had 6 children, 3 of whom were still living (14).

In 1870, he was living in ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Carrie, daughter Jennie, and Carrie's family (12). He was a range manufacturer, and owned $5,000 in personal property (12).

In 1880, he was living at 1810 Van Pelt Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Caroline, children Jenny, Florence [?], and George, and with Caroline's family (10). He was a ship broker (10).

He attended the 1884 meeting of the 91st's Survivors' Association (2).

In 1890, he was living at 1931 Sharswood, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6, 7). He was a clerk (7).

On 6 February 1893, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 11).

In 1900, he was living at 1853 [illegible street name], 32nd ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife Caroline (13). He was a military clerk (13).

He died on 22 October 1904, of cirrhosis of liver, with "constitutional" reasons contributing (9, 16). He died at 2224 North 18th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). He was a clerk (16). Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 2224 N 18th Street (his son-in-law's home) (9). Many organization were invited to attend, including Post 8 of the GAR (9). On 26 October 1904, he was buried at Mt Peace Cemetery (9, 16).

On 28 October 1904, his widow, Caroline A Haines, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 11).

In 1910, Caroline Haines was living at 1813 Huntingdon Street, 28th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). She was living with her daughter Florence and Florence's family (14).

In 1920, Caroline Haines was living at 2561 18th Street, 28th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). She was living with her daughter Jennie and Jennie's family (15).
