In 1860, he was living in ward 7 of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was a liquor dealer (12). He was living with Philip and Hannah Hamburg (presumably his parents), Moses and Isaac Hamburg (probably his brothers), and Christiana (a domestic servant) (12).
In June 1861, he was second lieutenant of Company A, First Regiment, of the Philadelphia Home Guards, from the Thirteenth Ward (with Edgar Gregory as captain) (19).
When he was enrolled, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6).
He was enrolled and mustered into service as second lieutenant of company A on 30 September 1861 (1, 3, 4, 6, 8 [4 Jun 61], 20).
He resigned on 3 June 1862, on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 3, 4, 6, 8). He was then second lieutenant of company A (1, 2, 4).
He married Fannie Cohen about 1865/1866 (11, 18). In 1900, she had had six children, four of whom were alive (11). In 1910, she reported having had five children, four of whom were alive (14).
In 1870, he was living in the 13th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was a pawn broker, with $3000 in personal property (13). He was living with his wife Fanny, and three of their children (Sally, Bertha, and Hanna) (13).
On 2 January 1873, the Mayor of Philadelphia issued a pawnbrokers' license to Ansel Hamburg (16).
In 1880, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was living with his wife Frances Hamburg, four daughters (Bertha, Sarah, Hannah, and Caroline), and one servant (5). He was a pawnbroker (5).
On 2 or 9 August 1886, he applied successfully for a pension (7, 10).
In 1890, he was living at 1323 South Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8, 9). He was in trimmings (9). He had lumbago, caused by "camp exposure" (8).
In May 1898, Carl Ansel Hamberg (perhaps his son?) offered to serve in the Spanish-American War (17).
In 1900, he was living at 1323 South Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which he was renting (11). He had a furnishing store (11). He was living with his wife Fannie, three of his daughters (Bertha, Hannah, and Carrie), and a servant (11).
He died on 16 December 1901, at 1323 South Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of fatty degeneration of the heart (6, 15, 23). He was buried on Thursday 19 December 1901, at Mt Sinai (15, 23).
On 20 December 1901, his widow, Fanny Hamberg, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 10).
In 1910, his widow Fannie was living at 1532 Page Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). She was living with her daughters Bertha and Carrie (14).
On 24 October 1911, his widow Fannie Hamberg died (18). She was buried in Mt Sinai Cemetery (18).
