Before the war

He was 23 years old when he was enlisted (3, 6 [13 in 1850], 7 [22 in 1860]). He was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland (3, 6 [PA], 7 [PA]).

In 1850, he was living in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with John and Elizabeth Harkinson (presumably his parents), various other Harkinson's (presumably his siblings), and one person with a different name (presumably a servant) (6). He had attended school within the year (6).

In 1860, he was living in Germantown, in the 22nd ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with John and Elizabeth Harkinson (7), and various other people (presumably including his siblings) (7). He was a tinner (7).

Description

He was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and black hair (3).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered in company K on 2 December 1861 (1, 3, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Parsons (3, 4). He served as a private, initially in company K (1).

He was transferred on 24 December 1861 to company C (1, 5).

He died of consumption, on 11 May 1862, at the regimental hospital in Alexandria, Virginia (1, 2, 3, 4). His body was sent to his family [perhaps in Pennsylvania] (2).
