Francis Dennis Harrigan

Before the war

He was 24 years old when he enlisted (3, 12 [40 in 1880], 16 [53 at death in 1892]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 12).

When he enlisted, he was a carpenter (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (3).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 28 August 1861 (1, 3, 8). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, by Captain Lentz (1, 3). He was mustered into service by Colonel Reiff (3). He served in company E (1).

He was promoted to corporal on 1 May 1862, for soldierly appearances, replacing Louis Brophy, who had been promoted (2, 3).

He fought, as a corporal, at the battle of Gettysburg (5).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist (6). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (7).

He mustered out on 9 September 1864 when his term expired, at Weldon Railroad, Virginia (1, 3, 4, 8 [1864?], 11).

After the war

On 4 April 1878, he successfully applied for a pension (10, 15).

In 1880, he was living at 1621 South Tenth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Mary, and children Charles, Mary, Cornelius, and Margaret, along with his in-laws (12). He was a carpenter (12).

In 1890, he was living at 1621 Tenth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). The only Dennis Harrigan in the 1890 Gopsill's city directory was living at rear 245 Levant Street, and was a shoemaker--but based on his appearance in other censuses, that Dennis Harrigan is a different person (9).

He died on 6 January 1892, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of valvular heart disease (14, 15, 16). He was a carpenter (16).

The funeral was held on Saturday from his late residence, 1511 [?] South Eighth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). High Mass was held at Annunciation Church (14). On 9 January 1892, he was buried at New Cathedral Cemetery (14, 16).

On 22 January [?] 1892, his widow, Mary Harrigan, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (9, 15).

In 1900, his widow Mary was living at 1500 South Eighth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). She was living with her children Charles, Regina, Cornelius, Catherine, and Alice, along with a boarder (13). She had had six children, five of whom were living (13). Presumably the Margaret in the 1880 census is the sixth child, which would imply that the Regina in the 1900 census is the Mary in the 1900 census.
