Charles Haughey

Before the war

He was 23 years old when he enlisted (3, 10 [22 in 1860]). He was born in Pasely, Scotland (3, 10).

In 1860, he was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with Ellen Haughey (presumably his wife) (10). He was a laborer (10).

When he was enlisted, he was a teamster (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 4 inches tall, had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (3).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service for three years in company E on 4 September 1861, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania (1, 3). He was enlisted by Captain Lentz, and mustered into service by Captain Stover (3).

He deserted on 7 August 1862 (3, 4). He was caught on 4 February 1864 (3, 4). He lost pay for the time he was absent, by regimental order (3, 4).

He died on 12 May 1864 at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia (1, 2, 3), of wounds received while charging the enemy's works (2, 3, 7 [wounded]). (Bates (1) and the descriptive roll (3) report him killed in action.)

On 10 September 1864, the regiment apparently reported him discharged because his term had expired (6).

On 26 January 1865, company E published resolutions mourning his death (and fifteen others), and sympathizing with their families (8).

After the war

On 6 March 1865, his widow, Ellen Haughey, applied successfully for a pension (5, 9).

On 18 December 1866, his minor dependent, E Clowney [?], applied successfully for a pension (5, 9).
