He was a "segar maker" (2, 3 ['cigarmaker']). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 6-1/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, gray eyes, and light hair (2, 3).

During the war

He also served in company C of the 21st Pennsylvania Infantry (7).

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 27 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3, 8). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr (2). He served as a private in company A (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (15).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 3).

On 12 March 1864, he was reported under arrest (5). He probably returned from arrest on 21 April 1864 (6).

On 1 August 1864, he was reported absent sick (12).

On 17 August 1864, he was sick in the division hospital (13).

He was absent, sick, when the regiment mustered out (1, 2, 3, 8 [10 July 1865]).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in the 17th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He was an organ manufac[turer], and owned $300 in personal property (14). He was living with his wife Elizabeth, and three children (14).

In 1880, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4). He was a brakeman for a railroad (4). He was living with the following people (4):

In 1890, he was living at 626 Penn, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8 [no address], 9). He was a driver (9).

On 10 December 1890, he successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (7, 11).

He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 26 April 1895 (10, 17). He was married (17). He was a driver (17). On 29 April 1895, he was buried in the New Cathedral Cemetery, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 17).

On 17 June 1895, his widow, Elizabeth Hebding, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (7, 11).

On 20 December 1908, Elizabeth Hebding died (16). The funeral was held Wednesday morning, from 2423 Sharswood Street, the home of her daughter Mrs Eugene Kuhn (16). She was buried at New Cathedral Cemetery (16).

HEBDING.--On December 20, 1908, ELIZABETH, wife of the late Charles Hebding, aged 65 years. The relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral, on Wednesday morning at 8.30 o'clock, from the residence of her daughter, Mrs Eugene Kuhn, 2423 Sharswood Street. High mass at St Elizabeth's Church at 10 AM. Interment at New Cathedral Cemetery.
