During the war

He died on 24 June 1865, in or near Washington, DC (1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 12). He was buried at the National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia (1, 5) or in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Bendersville, Adams County, Pennsylvania (11, 12).

After the war

On 30 September 1865, his widow, Susan Heller, applied successfully for a pension (4, 10).

In 1870, his widow, Susan Heller, was living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (7). She was living with (presumably her children) Samuel, Mary, Belle, Sigel, William and Ida (7). She owned $2,500 in real estate and $700 in personal property (7).

In 1880, his widow, Susan Heller, was living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (8). She was living with (presumably her children) Calvin, Sigel, William, and Ida, along with a boarder (8).

In 1890, his widow, Susan Heller, was living in Wenk, Adams County, Pennsylvania (3).
