James H Hewitt

Before the war

He was born in July 1840 (4 [1839], 9 [40 in 1880], 10 [59 in 1900], 11 [67 in 1920]). He was born in New York (9, 10, 11, 12).

He graduated from the University of Buffalo Medical Department in 1865 (4).

He was living in Warren County when he was enrolled (6 [no state mentioned]).

During the war

He also served in Baldwin's Independent Company of the Pennsylvania Militia Infantry (2).

He was enrolled and mustered into service on 29 June 1865, as an assistant surgeon on the headquarters staff, near Washington DC (1, 3, 6, 13).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with the regiment (1, 3, 6).

After the war

He was married to Bertha [unknown surname] (7).

He was licensed in 1877 (4).

In 1880, he was living in Summerfield, St Clair County, Illinois (9). He was a physician (9). His wife, Anna Hewitt, was living with him (9). A servant, Caroline Morkel, was also living with them (9).

He married (his second marriage) Bertha [unknown surname] in 1887/1888 (10, 11). In 1910 and 1920, Bertha had had four children, two of whom were living (10, 11).

He applied successfully from Illinois for a pension on 31 August 1894 and on 6 March 1907 (2, 7).

In 1900, he was living in Summerfield, Illinois (10). He was a physician (10). He was living with his wife Bertha and children Herbert and Gladys (10).

In 1909, he was living in Summerfield, Illinois, which had a population of 360 (4).

In 1910, he was living on St Louis Street, in Lebanon Township, St Clair County, Illinois (11). He was a physician (11). He was living with his wife Bertha and children Herbert and Gladys (11).

He died on 26 February 1912 (2), at Lebanon, Illinois (5). His death was reported to the American Medical Assocation on 5 March 1912 (5).

His widow, Bertha Hewitt, applied successfully for a pension on 11 March 1912 (2, 7).

In 1920, his widow, Bertha Hewitt, was living in East St Louis, Illinois, with her daughter and son-in-law Gladys and Edgar Ogden [?] (12).

In 1930, his widow, Bertha Hewitt, was living at 810 32nd [?] Street, East St Louis, Illinois, with her daughter Gladys Ogden and her family (14).
