William Imler

Before the war

He was born in June 1841 (12) or 6 June 1843, to Henry Imler and Barbara Croyle (14, 17 [6 June 1842], 18 [7 (?) in 1850]). He was 20 years old when he was enlisted (3, 4, 5, 9 [17 in 1860], 10 [26 in 1870], 11 [37 in 1880], 12 [58 in 1900], 13 [68 in 1910]). He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (3, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 18).

In 1850, he was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (18). He was living with his parents, Henry and Barbara Imler, and with other Imler's (18).

In 1860, he was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, with his parents (9). He was a farm laborer (9).

When he was enlisted, he was a farmer (3, 5).

His brother, Adam Imler, and his cousin Martin Imler, also served in the 91st Pennsylvania (15).

Description

He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (3, 5).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 3, 5). He was enlisted and mustered into service as a private on 21 September 1864, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (1, 3, 4, 5, 6 [8 Oct 64], 7). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (3, 5). His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district (3, 5). He served as a private in company B (1).

He was wounded on 27 October 1864, at Hatcher's Run, Virginia (5).

He was reported present on the muster roll for January-February 1865) (16).

According to the regimental hospital records, "Imler of Co. B" was treated for constipation from 22 to 26 February 1865 (16). (This may have been Adam or Martin Imler.)

He was discharged at Washington, DC, by general order 94, War Department (dated 25 May 65), on 30 May 1865 (1, 3, 7) or 25 May 1865 (2, 6 [6 July 65]).

After the war

On 23 March 1868, he married Rebecca Sill (12, 13, 14). This was her second marriage, and his first (13). In 1910, she had had eleven children, ten of whom were still alive (13). William and Rebecca had nine children (14):

In 1870, he was living in St Clairsville Borough, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Rebecca, his son Mimlton, and two step-daughters (?) (10). He was a huckster, and he owned $1,300 in real estate and $400 in personal property (10).

On 13 April 1880, he successfully applied for a pension (7, 8).

In 1880, he was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Rebecca and seven children (11). He was a farmer (11).

In 1890, he was living in Imler Valley, King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (6). He had received a gunshot wound in his left breast (6).

In 1900, he was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Rebecca and four children (12). He was a farmer (12).

He again applied for a pension on [illegible] 1907 (7).

In 1910, he was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife and two children (13). He was a farmer (13).

His wife, Rebecca S Imler, died on 20 April 1911 (17).

He died on 21 April 1921, at Imler, Pennsylvania (6, 14 [Osterburg], 17 [18 Apr 1921]). He was buried in the Village of Imler Cemetery, Pennsylvania (14).
