He was a brass moulder (3, 4). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (3 [dark hair], 4 [black hair]).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 23 August 1861 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 3, 4 [mustered in as corp], 7, 8). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr (3). He served in company A (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11).

At some point--probably on 24 December 1863--he was promoted to 4th corporal (2, 8).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 4, 8).

On 12 March 1864, he was reported under arrest (5). He returned from arrest on 21 April 1864 (6).

At some point, he was promoted to 5th sergeant (2).

On 26 October 1864, he was reported off duty (10).

He was absent, sick, when the regiment mustered out (1, 3, 4). He was then a sergeant (1). He was discharged on 16 July 1865 (7, 8 [10 Jun 65]).

After the war

On 18 July 1881 and 15 February 1907, he applied successfully for a pension (7).

In 1890, he was living at 617 Columbia Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8, 9). He was a laborer (9).
