Asa Johnson

Before the war

He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). He was born on 9 September 1837, to Abe Johnson and Mary Mnu Johnson (5, 8). He was 27 years old when he was enlisted (3, 6 [32 in 1870], 7 [41 in 1880], 8 [62 in 1900], 9 [72 in 1910], 10 [82 in 1920], 14 [88 (?) in 1926]).

On 4 August 1864, he married Casander Buxton (5). They had seven children (5):

He was a farmer when he was enlisted (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (3).

During the war

He also served in company I of the 171st Pennsylvania (4, 12, 13).

He was drafted from the sixteenth congressional district (1, 3). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 3, 12 [21 Sep 61]). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (3). He served as a private in company F (1, 12 [also served in H], 13 [F and H]).

He was discharged near Washington DC by general order on 1 June 1865 (1, 2, 12 [30 May 65]).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Jonathan Creek Township, Moultrie County, Illinois (6). He was living with his wife Casander and children Mary and John (6). He was a farmer, and owned $350 in personal property (6).

In 1880, he was living in Jonathan Creek Township, Moultrie County, Illinois (7). He was living with his wife Casander, and children Mary, John, Bessie, and Florence (7). He was a carpenter (7).

On 28 January 1888, he applied successfully for a pension (13).

In 1900, he was living in Jonathan Creek Township, Moultrie County, Illinois (8). He was living with his children John, Maud, and William (8). He was a carpenter, and had been out of work 2 months in the previous year (8).

On 12 September 1907, he again applied for a pension (12, 13).

In 1910, he was living in Jonathan Creek Township, Moultrie County, Illinois (9). He was living with his daughter Maud (9). He was a general house carpenter (9).

In 1915, he was living in Moultrie County, Illinois (4).

In 1920, he was living in Jonathan Creek Township, Moultrie County, Illinois (10). He was living with his daughter Maud and granddaughter Freda Berry (10). He was a farmer, with a truck farm (10).

On 11 August 1926, he attended a reunion, at Sullivan, Illinois (14). He was then living in Sullivan (14).

He died on 14 April 1927, in Jonathan Creek Township, Moultrie County, Illinois (5, 11 [certificate 700049], 12 [Sullivan IL], 13 [Sullivan IL]). He was buried in April 1927, in Jonathan Creek Cemetery, Moultrie, Illinois (5).
