Before the war

He was a tailor (6; 9 has 'barkeep' [?], 10). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enlisted (6).

Description

He was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (6 [5'8-1/2", dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair], 9 [5'7", light complexion, grey eyes, light hair], 10 [5'8", dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair]).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 24 September 1861 (1, 5, 6, 9, 13). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Dye (5, 6, 9). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 6). He initially served in company D (1).

He was transferred to company F on 31 October 1861 (4).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863 (1, 6, 10). He was reenlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant W H Carpenter (6, 10).

He was reported dropped as a deserter on 28 April 1864 (7), and regained from desertion on 29 April 1864 (8).

On 17 February 1865, he was promoted to corporal, effective 1 January 1865 (4, 6).

On 16 June 1865, he was promoted to sergeant, effective 1 June 1865 (1 [1 June], 3 [effective 16 June], 6 [1 Jun]).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 13).

After the war

On 27 May 1880, he applied for a pension, apparently unsuccessfully (12, 13).
