John H Kennedy

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9, 14). He was 21 years old when he was enlisted (9 [23, probably in 1863], 10 [21], 14 [24? at death in 1866]).

Description

He was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and black hair (9, 10 [grey eyes]).

He was a confectioner when he was enlisted (10). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 29 November 1861 (1, 10). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was mustered in at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, as a private in company I (1, 10).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (1, 10). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (9, 10).

On 12 March 1864, he was reported under arrest (5).

On 18 March 1864, he was released from arrest and restored to duty, but the pay for the time he were absent, transportation, and the reward authorized for deserters, along with the cost of any lost property were deducted from his pay (2).

He was promoted to corporal on 22 October 1864 (4, 8).

On 14 November 1864, Sellers listed him as charged with one knapsack, presumably because he had lost it (3).

On 13 February 1865, he went on a furlough, which ended on 28 February 1865 (6). He returned on 27 February 1865 (6).

On 17 March 1865, he was detailed for duty in the 3rd brigade pioneer corps (5).

On 17 June 1865, the regiment forwarded his descriptive list to Chester Hospital (9, 12).

He was absent, sick, when the regiment mustered out (1, 8 [in hospital], 10 [in hospital]).

After the war

On 1 January 1866, he died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of syphilis (13 [1 Jan], 14 [2 Jan]). The funeral was held on 4 January 1866, at 10 AM, from the office of Burton J Kollock (13, 14). He was buried at Lafayette Cemetery (13, 14).

His relatives and friends, and Company I, Ninety-first Regiment Penna. Vols. (Colonel Gregory commanding), are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from the office of Burton J. Kollock, No. 700 [?] S. Second street, below Shippen, this (Thursday) morning, at 10 o'clock. To proceed to Lafayette Cemetery.
