Before the war

He was born in November 1840 (9). He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (4, 5, 8 [France], 9, 10). He was 22 years old when he was enlisted (4, 5, 8 [40 in 1880], 9 [59 in 1900], 10 [69 in 1910]).

He was a roller when he was enlisted (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair (4, 5).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 4, 5). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 10 July 1863 in the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry (1, 4, 5, 6 [7 Jul]). He was enlisted for three years (4, 5). His service was credited to the 22nd congressional district (4, 5).

He was transferred on 20 July 1864 from company L of the 62nd Pennsylvania to the 91st (1, 11). On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G (2). On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company (3). He was then absent, as a private (3). He served as a private in company K (1).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 6).

After the war

In 1869/70, he married Frances [Bicohel (??)] (9). She had no children (9, 10).

In 1880, he was living on Fulton Street, in ward 35, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (8). He was a knobler [?] (8). He was living with his wife Frances and nephew George Knittle (8).

On 6 January 1882, he applied successfully for a pension (11).

In 1890, he was living on Fingal Street, in the 35th ward of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (6). He had been shot in the left thigh (6).

In 1900, he was living on Fingal Street, in ward 35, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (9). He was apparently not working (9). He was living with his wife Frances, adopted daughter Rose, mother-in-law Anne Bicohel [?] and brother-in-law John Bicohel (9).

In 1910, he was living at 347 Fengal Street, in ward 19, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (10). He was retired (10). He was living with his wife Francis (10).

He died on 5 July 1911 (7, 11 [5 Oct]). He was buried at St. Martin's, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (7).

On 12 October 1911, his widow applied successfully for a pension (11).
