George Brubaker Kulp

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1845 (1, 4, 5, 6 [64 in 1910], 7 [74 in 1920], 9 [84 in 1930]). He claimed to be 19 years old when he enlisted (1), but was actually 16 (4), and was discharged because he was under age (1).

When he was enlisted, he was a whip maker (1).

Description

He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (1).

During the war

He enlisted for three years in company E on 22 July 1862, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania (1, 4, 10). He was enlisted and mustered into service by Lieutenant Gregory (1).

On 22 April 1863, he was captured, while on duty at United States Ford (3, 4). He spent several months in a Confederate prison (4).

On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Philadelphia and able to rejoin the regiment, and requested his return (2). Sinex reported that Kulp was said to be working at brick making, and that he was a paroled prisoner (2).

After he was released from prison, he was discharged because he was under age (1, 4). He was discharged on 25 July 1863 (10).

He also served in company F of the 95th Pennsylvania Infantry (8, 10).

After the war

In 1868/1869, he married Anna [unknown surname] (5, 6, 9 [23 years old at first marriage!?]). In 1900 and 1910, she had had five children, all of whom were alive (5, 6). This was his second marriage (6).

He was married, and became a minister in Pennsylvania, within ten years of his discharge (4). He founded several churches in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Nebraska (4). He "was known as a fiery, no-nonsense evangelist preacher" (4). (See George Kulp [a separate page, not part of the 91st PA website] for some of his sermons.)

On 13 April 1897, he applied successfully from Michigan for a pension (8, 10).

In 1900, he was living at 44 Meachem Avenue, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan (5). He was living with his wife Anna, and children Sadie and Charles (5). He was a minister (5).

On 25 July 1907, he again applied for a pension (10).

In 1910, he was living at 112 Battle Creek Avenue, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan (6). He was living with his wife Anna, his daughter Sadie, and his mother Sarah Kulp (6). He was a minister in the Holiness Church (6).

In 1920, he was living at 106 Battle Creek Avenue, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan (7). He was living with his wife Anna and a servant (7). He was a minister--evangelist (7).

In 1930, he was living at 4 Grand View Drive, Battle Creek Township, Calhoun County, Michigan (9). He was living with his sister-in-law Mary E Mahick [?] (9). He was not working (9).

He was 93 years old when he died (4).
