Before the war

He was 45 years old when he was enlisted (8, 9 [43], 10 [41 in 1860], 12 [33 in 1850]). He was born in London, England (8, 9, 10, 12).

In 1850, he was living in ward 4, Moyamensing, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with Sarah (presumably his wife), Thomas and Joseph (presumably their sons), and Jesse Pyle (12). He was a varnisher (12).

In 1860, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with Sarah (presumably his wife), and six children (presumably theirs) (10). He was a varnisher, and owned $300 in personal property (10).

When he was enlisted, he was a varnisher (8, 9).

Description

He was 5 feet 0 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (8, 9 [5'1"]).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 20 August 1862 (1 [6 Aug 62], 8, 9). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory (8, 9 [Col Reiff]). He was mustered in service by Colonel Reiff (8, 9). He served as a private in company D (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was the only man who had more than fifteen months to serve who was unwilling to reenlist (2). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (5).

On 15 April 1864, Lieutenant Colonel Sinex recommended him for a detail, in compliance with general order 18 (8 April 1864) from the Army Headquarters (3). He does not say what the detail was for.

According to a report in September (?) 1864, he had been detailed as a stretcher bearer by General Humphreys on 6 December 1862, and was still detailed there (4).

He was discharged on 2 June 1865, in the field near Washington DC, by special order (1) or by general order 26, War Department (6, 7).

[I have not found Israel or Sarah in the 1870 or 1880 censuses, and I suspect they are both dead--Jos H Lazarus, 21, is living in Camden, New Jersey, probably with his wife Mary and child Alfred, but also with Mary (16), William (14), Ida V (11), and Indianna (9) (the last four all born in Pennsylvania). (see 1870 US census, New Jersey, Camden County, 25th district Gloucester, microfilm series M593, roll 855, page 300 = 18 handwritten)]

[I did not find an entry from him in the Ancestry index to the pension index by name]
